OVERVIEW AND TREATMENT OPTIONS:

Radon is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless radioactive noble gas, and it is the decay product of radium.  It’s a contaminant that affects indoor air quality and is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking, and the leading cause among non-smokers.   The main source of this gas is the ground from which it escapes and disperses into the environment both in the air and also can occur in your ground water.

Radon is a radioactive gas which occurs in nature as a result of the radioactive decay of uranium, which is a radioactive element found in rocks and dirt beneath houses, buildings, and structures.  As the uranium breaks down it decays into radon.  Some of that radon can diffuse into the ground water from which you drink.  Radon is then released into the air as water flows into sinks, tubs, and appliances.  Household activities requiring the use of hot water, such as showering, washing clothes, or running the dishwasher can release large amounts of radon particularly in the rooms where the water is being used.

One of the primary lung cancer risks, in most homes, is from breathing air contaminated with radon gas entering through openings in the foundation or slab.  Radon in well water may also contribute to radon exposure and resulting in lung cancer risk.  Occupants of these homes inhale radon gas that leaves the water during showering and other water uses.

TREATMENT

Radon mitigation is best accomplished through AERATION of your water supply.  This means exposing the water to air to release the gas and vent it safely out and away from the home or business.  The aerated water should then be filtered through a carbon filtration system.   BWS always recommends to have an ULTRAVIOLET system to follow an aeration unit to kill any airborne bacteria that may develop.
